From Foreign Land to Home: An Entrepreneurial Dream Over a Bowl of Hainanese Chicken Rice

My Story

I am Albert Lam, born in Guangdong, China, later relocated to Hong Kong, and now residing in the San Francisco Bay Area. After immigrating to the United States, I experienced challenging years of language barriers, financial constraints, and lack of connections. Yet I have always believed: creativity, culture, and food are bridges that transcend all boundaries.

As a multi-skilled creative professional, I possess expertise in design, photography, video production, cooking, and baking, and have accumulated rich brand resources. Over the years, I have been searching for an answer: How can I use my abilities to create a brand that both sustains my livelihood and connects community culture?

RAIN KITCHEN: More Than Food, A Cultural Vessel

RAIN KITCHEN is my answer.

This is a focused single-product brand specializing in Hainanese chicken rice. This dish carries my childhood memories, longing for home, and reverence for cultural roots. In my kitchen in this foreign land, I recreate those familiar aromas and warmth with my own hands, hoping every Bay Area family can feel the sincerity and warmth from Asia.

Why Choose a Single-Product Model?

While I excel at preparing various dishes and fine baking, I believe focus touches hearts. After extensive research and development, my Hainanese chicken rice has earned unanimous praise from family and friends. I have invested countless efforts in perfecting the craft and optimizing processes, ensuring product quality and efficiency can support future business growth.

Market research shows Bay Area consumers have strong demand for high-quality, safe, and reliable food products. Combined with my professional advantages in community marketing, brand packaging, and promotion, RAIN KITCHEN will undoubtedly stand out in fierce competition.

A Deeper Meaning

Every bite of Hainanese chicken rice embodies the struggle stories of Southeast Asian immigrants, the resilient spirit of families, and the mission of cultural inheritance. RAIN KITCHEN doesn’t just sell food—it is a cultural vessel, a space for people to pause in their fast-paced lives and savor memories and emotions.

I Need Your Support Now

I have completed brand design, website development, and product testing (please visit www.rainkitchen.com), but I need funding to:

  • Rent a commercial kitchen
  • Purchase cooking equipment
  • Source packaging materials
  • Participate in farmers market activities
  • Launch initial product sales

This Kiva zero-interest loan will help me leap from a home kitchen to a community brand.

My Promise and Vision

I plan to engage through farmers market stalls and cultural dining events, inviting people from different backgrounds to share food and stories. I also hope to use this platform to support other minority entrepreneurs, letting more immigrant voices be heard.

RAIN KITCHEN is also the first certified module of the larger brand EATBOX (eatbox.com & eatbox.org) that I am developing. EATBOX centers on culture, creativity, and social impact, and will integrate multiple cultural kitchens, character design, and charitable projects to create an innovative platform that achieves a win-win combination of commercial and social value.

Inviting You to Become a Dream Co-Creator

Supporting RAIN KITCHEN means you’re not just helping me start a business—you’re making a cultural story visible and helping an immigrant dream come true.

Let RAIN KITCHEN sprout, grow, and flourish in the Bay Area rain. When this small dream is validated, I will have the confidence and strength to achieve even grander visions and futures.
